World Leather Day was established in 2022 by Leather Naturally (LN) and Leather Working Group (LWG), a non-profit leather industry organization, to promote this material and educate the public about the positive qualities that genuine leather has in terms of its durability, as well as its compliance with the concept sustainability, writes Worldfootwear.com.
“Without the production of natural leather, about 10 million tons of food industry waste would go to landfill,” the LN website notes. "In a world where we're trying to do more with less, keep waste to a minimum, and where we have the experience and technology to turn this by-product [of the food industry] into a versatile, durable material, we must do just that."
To this end, on April 26, 2023, the upholstery, footwear and bag industries will take part in a global social media campaign aimed at changing the negative image of natural leather.
