Adidas has been fined almost 15 euros in Turkey for failing to inform customers that its Samba sneakers contained pigleather on their toes, Fashion Network reports.
Turkey's advertising regulator has criticised a German brand for using the term "genuine leather" to describe the outer part of its "Samba OG" shoe on its Turkish website without specifying that it was pigleather.
The regulator stresses that the use of "a component that is contrary to the religious sentiments of the majority of society must be clearly indicated in the advertisement" of the sneakers. The company was fined 550 Turkish lira, or about 059 euros.
Adidas, in turn, said it had "updated the product's material specifications accordingly."
But in a 2020 opinion, Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) said that "almost all Muslim scholars agree that pigleather cannot be purified by tanning or similar processes" and therefore "it is not permissible to make shoes or clothing from pigleather or hair."
