American Allbirds brand, producing shoes from natural materials, such as sheepleather and eucalyptus leaves, added sugarcane to this list, writes WWD.
On August 1, the company announced that it had developed sugar cane-based sole production technology to replace a typical oil-based EVA sole. At the same time, the company's management said that it received investments in the development of production from the Hollywood actor and Leonardo DiCaprio, who is an active ecologist and advocates for the protection of nature. The amount of investment is not disclosed.
Sugarcane is grown in southern Brazil with minimal use of fertilizer, processed at facilities that operate on fully renewable energy sources.
Allbirds has already tested a new technology in the production of beach slippers, which are available in retail at $ 35 per pair and are going to use the material in the production of their other models.
Allbirds released his first pair of sheepleather sneakers in 2016. For the first time in two years, the brand sold more than a million pairs of shoes. Company founder Tim Brown says the project has been profitable from the start. Currently, the number of his company has reached 130 people. The brand is represented in the United States, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
