The Industrial Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of Argentina received representatives of the national leather industry to discuss two provisions regulating the commercial use of terms related to leather.
Similar laws to protect the interests of consumers, which prohibit the use of the terms "eco", "bio", "vegan leather" in the description of the characteristics of leather, due to the fact that these terms can mislead consumers about the true qualities of leather, have been adopted in recent years in a number of countries. Among them are Italy and Portugal.
In the United States, similar rules were adopted in 2024 in New York State. And in Russia, a similar proposal was submitted to the Federation Council in 2023 by the Russian Union of Leather and Shoemakers (RUSKO). However, so far, according to the general director of RUSKO, Alexandra Andrunakievich, the corresponding changes have only been made to GOST. According to GOST, the prefix "eco" cannot be used to determine the quality of leather. But the law itself prohibiting the use of these terms is being approved by the EEC.
