The number of clothing and shoe stores is declining
Shopping malls are seeing fewer clothing and shoe stores. By the end of 2025, the number of fashion retail outlets in Russian shopping malls had decreased by 10-15%. This follows from a survey conducted by the Union of Shopping Centers (USC), Kommersant reports.
The survey was conducted by members of the STC, whose members include managers of 800 retail facilities in various cities across the country.
One of the reasons is the departure of a large number of brands from the market, some of which simply ceased to exist, while others went online.
According to Chek Index, the number of clothing and footwear purchases in 2025 decreased by 11% year-on-year, with offline sales falling by 17% and online sales growing by 9%. Over almost a full year, fashion retailers lost 6% of their traffic, according to Focus Technologies. At the beginning of 2026 (December 29, 2025 – February 1, 2026), the figure declined by 3% year-on-year.
The vacated fashion retail space in shopping centers is being replaced by other formats – cafes, food courts, and public spaces.
