The sporting goods retailer is expanding its buyback service across all of its UK stores. Customers will be given store credit for returning items they no longer use.
The buyback program will initially affect Decathlon's own brand bikes, but will later be extended to all product categories, including kayaks, surfboards, rackets and fitness equipment. The survey, commissioned by Decathlon, found that 50% of adults keep unused sports equipment at home, with bikes making up 18% of unused kit. In addition, 48% of parents admitted that their children do not use bicycles at all or use them only occasionally.
The initiative follows the launch of a rental initiative earlier this year, where customers can rent a range of sports equipment for £10 per day. Decathlon has now said it expects its UK service to repair 15 bikes a year by 000, with 2025 staff already trained to provide round-the-clock services (rental and buy-back).
“With the cost of living continuing to impact participation in sport and fitness across the UK, we at Decathlon are determined to ensure that exercise continues and is not impacted by rising costs of goods. The BuyBack program will allow customers to return old and unwanted gym equipment for store credit to use to upgrade their equipment,” said Decathlon UK’s Head of Sustainability, Chris Allen.
Since launching in Europe earlier this year, 251 products have been purchased, resold and given a second life across the continent.
