A subsidiary of Danish shoe manufacturer ECCO, Ecco Leather supports research and development in the field of leather and engages designers, giving them complete freedom to operate in its tanneries and workshops in the Netherlands in the Ecco.Kollektive project. The project’s new collection of shoes and bags was created in collaboration with the creative director of the luxury brand Helmut Lang, Peter Do, and will go on sale today, writes WWD.
This is Do's fourth collaboration with ECCO, and the shoe design returns to the sporty rubber outsole he developed with ECCO during the first collaboration. It was called “the Hybrid”. The designer also experimented with top options. Platform boots with a square toe became his signature style; rubber boots with a side zip and sneakers also featured original designs. New to the collection are elegant men's moccasins and ballet shoes.
Sticking with a modest color palette of black, beige and burgundy, Do emphasized the texture of the leather. “We wanted something that felt aged and lived-in, so the [Ecco] team did a lot of testing to get that distressed look,” the designer said.
While most shoes have a distressed look, Lydia's glossy patent leather bags look brand new. The design uses oval clasps that reflect the "O" in the spelling of Peter Do, the designer explained.
It is noted that Do will not participate in the fifth season of Ecco.Kollektive, which will promote leather goods from Craig Green, Louis-Gabriel Nouchi and Ottolinger, but the material he developed during his collaboration with Ecco Leather will likely play a major role in future collections for both Lang and his own eponymous brand.
Prices for items from the Ecco.Kollektive x Peter Do collection range from $425 to $2155.
