Global tannery Ecco Leather, which is part of the Danish footwear brand Ecco, has partnered with Ecovative to develop and commercialize mycelial materials (the fibrous root structure of mushrooms) forfor row new products.
In partnership, both companies will try to build on each other's strengths. On the one hand, Ecovative's know-how in developing sustainable mycelium materials allows the production of 100% pure mycelium to specification. On the other hand, Ecco Leather is uniquely experienced in designing and producing leather for a range of consumer products through innovative methods that require less time, chemicals and water than traditional textile finishing methods.
“The rapid and efficient growth of mycelium allows us to bring to market a new category of materials that allows consumers to make environmentally conscious choices when compared to materials derived from petrochemicals,” explained Bart Hofman-Kronborg, group director of production at Ecco Leather. - Historically, tanneries were associated exclusively with animal leathers; with the help of mycelium, this millennium-old industry can develop, diversify and reach a wider material market.”
