In the first six months of 2024, sales of Italian footwear fell by 9,1%. Domestic sales fell by 2,1%. Exports, according to data for 5 months of 2024, fell by 8,5% in value terms and by 6,8% in quantity, according to calculations by the Confindustria Assocalzaturifici Fashion Accessories Study Center.
France remains the main export market for Italian footwear, as it is in this country that the giants of the luxury fashion segment are based (+2,6% in value terms and +1,5% in volumes in the first 5 months of 2024). Italian footwear exports to the United States in physical terms from January to May 2024 compared to the period January-May 2023 decreased by 14,7%, while the decline in Italian footwear exports to Russia in value terms was 21,7%.
It is noted that in Italy itself, sales of sneakers remain at the same level, but this category is no longer growing.
According to statistics published by Assocalzaturifici, 107 shoe factories closed in Italy in the first half of the year, cutting 2359 jobs. Industry operators do not expect anything good from 2024. More than one in two shoe entrepreneurs expects a drop in sales between July and September. And three out of four are convinced that 2024 will be worse for their company than the previous one.
