leather export from Pakistan stagnates

Pakistan lags behind other countries in the South Asian region in the development of genuine leather exports, as it cannot diversify its product portfolio, and also because of the mismatch of Pakistani leather with the required environmental standards, writes worldfootwear.com.

“The share of Pakistan in the total export of processed and finished products in the South Asian region is 27% and 18%, respectively, which is much lower than the similar indicators in India,” the report of the State Bank of Pakistan says, which refers to the report of the Asian Development Bank for the second quarter 2017 / 18.

The State Bank of Pakistan announced that leather production continued to decline and decreased by 5,9% in the first half of the current fiscal year compared to the result for the same period of the previous fiscal year.

“Along with declining external demand, industry is facing pressure from regional competitors who focus on high value-added products,” the report said.

Nevertheless, the State Bank of Pakistan indicates that the country may increase its intra-South Asian trade to $ 90 million per year if Pakistan diversifies its product portfolio and optimizes the tariff structure of the industry.

The State Bank of Pakistan is confident that the country will be able to increase the combination of political support, adequate funding for laboratory tests, and the presence of a large number of domestic players in the international organization Leather Working Group, which brings together retail, manufacturers, chemical companies and other representatives of the leather industry of Pakistan its share in the global market for high-quality leather. The Leather Working Group is also working to promote environmental compliance in the manufacture of leather goods in Pakistan, which will be sold worldwide.
