Footwear exports from Portugal up 25%

In the first quarter of 2022, Portugal exported 21 million pairs of shoes worth 493 million euros. Overall, Portuguese footwear exports grew by 25,2% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2021, with increases in almost all of the most important markets. 

In general, the growth reached 23,2%, separately there is an increase in footwear exports to the markets of Germany (about 17%, to 111 million euros), France (an increase of 24,2%, to 106 million euros), the Netherlands (an increase of 28,7% , up to 75 million euros). Sales to the UK also increased by 29,5% to 28 million euros. 

However, the focus is on increasing the export of Portuguese footwear to markets outside the EU. In the US, exports rose by 64,8% to 22 million euros. In addition, Portuguese shoes perform well in Canada (up 62%, to €5m), China (up 96%, to €3,8m) and Japan (up 37,4%, to €2,5m). million euros). 

“Despite all external restrictions, the indicators suggest that 2022 will be the year of the establishment of Portuguese footwear in international markets. Exports not only grew compared to the previous year, but also surpassed the figures of 2019, just before the pandemic,” commented Luis Onofre, president of APICCAPS.
