The EU may enter into a trade war with China.

To balance trade relations with China, the European Union wants to follow the US example and introduce tariffs. This issue is under discussion, and some countries have reportedly already supported the introduction of a tariff barrier against China's surplus.

These include customs duties, in line with US President Donald Trump's strategy. According to the Financial Times, Germany, Poland, Belgium, and the Netherlands have supported the French proposal, which would allow the EU to quickly impose tariffs on goods from China.

From July 1, 2026, the EU will apply a flat rate of €3 per item on shipments from non-EU countries valued at up to €150. This measure targets e-commerce giants such as Shein, Temu, Amazon Haul, and others. The rule will remain in effect until July 1, 2028, the date when the European Customs Data Center for e-commerce is expected to become operational.

Italy, as Il Sole 24 Ore reports, has instead decided to extend the €2 tax on small quantities of goods from July 1 to October 1, 2026.

Britain will also remove the duty exemption on low-value imports (£135) from October 2028, six months earlier than planned, Reuters reports.
