France is experiencing a Shein invasion as French brands close their stores.

Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein is opening stores in the hottest shopping locations, including the spaces of shuttered Galleries Lafayette department stores across France.

On November 18, Shein is expected to open in the historic Galleries Lafayette building in the French town of Reims. However, beyond Reims, Galleries Lafayette is closing stores in a number of French cities this year, including Marseille, Dijon, Grenoble, Orleans, and Limoges.

Last week, Shein opened on the sixth floor of the BHV Marais department store in Paris, one of the most prestigious department stores in the French capital. Significantly, a week after Shein's opening at BHV, Sandro, Maje, and Claudie Pierlot also closed their doors there due to rent arrears.

Rising retail rents are affecting the appearance of central streets in French cities. In central Lille, a depressing scene of empty retail spaces with signs for rent is evident. Local residents have petitioned the city administration to reduce rents for retail space in the city center.
