France continues to fight Chinese retailer Shein

French authorities have fined Chinese retailer Shein €22 million for consumer protection violations related to issues with returns, product information, and order confirmation on the brand's online store.

The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Protection and Anti-Fraud said last week it had fined Shein €16,7 million for order confirmation issues and €5,8 million for issues with returns and environmental compliance information.

Shein considered this decision disproportionate and intends to appeal. "Technical issues that do not impact consumers and have already been addressed where necessary were used as the basis for the exceptional fine," a Shein spokesperson stated. "We intend to vigorously challenge both penalties in full."

A Chinese fast-fashion retailer is facing significant pressure from French authorities, but is confidently conquering the French market.

Last year, Shein stores actively occupied the spaces of the closing French department stores, the Galleries Lafayette. And after Shein opened on the sixth floor of the Parisian department store BHV Marais, one of the most prestigious in the French capital, a real scandal erupted in the press.

In July 2025, Shein was fined €40 million for misleading discounts, and in March 2026, the Paris Court of Appeal rejected a request to suspend its marketplace.
