According to the forecast of the French tanners association Alliance France Cuir, France will retain its fourth position in world leather exports in 2024, generating a positive trade balance of 5,8 billion euros. However, experts are wary of the onset of 2025, writes laconciera.it
In the first 8 months of 2024, raw hide exports in France fell by 4% in value terms. Although sales to Italy grew by 3% and to China by 8%, this growth could not compensate for the collapse in a number of other countries that are regular importers of French raw hides: -56% in Turkey, -47% in Spain and -7% in Belgium.
The decline in demand on international markets has had a negative impact on the turnover of the French leather industry, which fell by 4%. Deliveries of finished leather from France to Italy increased by 19%, but sales of finished leather to China fell by 31%.
“On average, we sell 40% fewer leathers than in 2018, despite the fact that costs have increased,” explains Christophe Déart, president of Alliance France Cuir.
French shoe exports fell 3%, even as sales to China doubled, driving turnover up 60%. Industry insiders say there is still room for growth in the Chinese market, particularly in the luxury segment.
Overall, French shoe factories are expected to see a 2024% decline in turnover in 3. Leather goods exports are expected to grow by just 2% in 2024, compared to 5% growth in leather goods exports last year.
