Exports of French footwear grew by 8% in the first 2021 months of 19 to € 2,58 billion, compared to the same period in 2020. Exports of leather goods also increased by 34%, writes Worldfootwear.com.
The data provided by the National Leather Council under the division of footwear into two categories - shoes and slippers. So from January to August 2021, the volume of footwear exports amounted to 2,57 billion euros, an increase of 19%. And the volume of exports of slippers fell to 13,5 million euros from 16,8 million euros in the same period in 2020, which is 20% less.
The total imports of footwear in 8 months of 2021 amounted to 4,46 billion euros, an increase compared to the data for the same period last year - 14%. At the same time, the volume of imports of shoes increased by 14%, amounting to 4,38 billion euros, while the volume of imports of slippers, showing a similar increase, reached 75,1 million euros.
The data also shows that from January to August 2021, exports of French leather goods increased by 34% compared to the same period last year, reaching 6,31 billion euros. This figure includes the export volume of handbags, which amounted to 3,83 billion euros (an increase of 42%).
French retailers and brands also purchased leather goods worth € 2,11 billion, representing a 14% increase in imports, mainly due to the acquisition of handbags, which in France increased by € 857,1 million.
In 2020, France ranked third in global footwear imports and seventh in footwear exports in value terms. According to the World Footwear Yearbook, French exports, which have grown slowly since 2018, declined in 2020 along with their imports, most likely due to a pandemic. In 2020, France imported 403 million pairs of shoes worth $ 7,37 billion and exported 107 million pairs worth $ 3,90 billion.
