The new generation of Chinese prefers to shop online. "Many people born in the 1990s, 2000s, and even 2010s don't associate themselves with such shopping malls at all," says 46-year-old Yang Dunqin, who last visited Galeries Lafayette. "When I see something I like in a store, I immediately check its price online."
Young Chinese are less drawn to established fashion houses and prefer trendy pop-up stores and up-and-coming local luxury brands. They now primarily want to "show off their personal taste," and when they buy luxury goods, they do so out of genuine interest, not just for status.
