India and the EU have completed free trade talks.

India and the European Union have finalised a free trade agreement that will reduce tariffs on most goods. This is the largest deal of its kind ever concluded between India and the EU.

According to the European Commission, the agreement is expected to double EU exports to India by 2032 by reducing or eliminating duties on 96,6% of goods sold in India. This will save European companies approximately €4 billion in duties.

In exchange, the EU will gradually eliminate tariffs on 99,5% of goods imported from India over seven years. Tariffs on a range of Indian goods, including seafood, leather and textile products, chemicals, rubber, non-ferrous metals, precious stones, and jewelry, will be reduced to zero.

The agreement will enter into force after its ratification by the European Parliament and India.

Earlier this month, the EU signed a free trade agreement with four South American countries that formed the Mercosur customs union. Last year, it announced a trade and investment agreement with Indonesia.
