India aims to significantly increase the production and export of footwear. India's Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said the country's shoe production and exports should increase tenfold in the short term, modaes.com writes.
Last year, India, which is now the world's second largest footwear manufacturer, launched the Footwear&Leather Development Program aimed at developing the footwear sector, which is now represented by 7000 companies. As part of the program, the country's government is going to allocate 2026 billion rupees (1,7 million euros) until 210,5 to support the shoe industry.
It is also planned to abolish duties on leather goods and impose restrictions on the import of shoes. The minister called on enterprises to produce shoes, including from materials alternative to natural leather, introducing a more ethical approach to the production of shoes, thereby implying the active development of exports.
It should be noted that today, according to the World Footwear 2021 Annual Analytical Report, India ranks 7th in terms of footwear exports in physical terms and 14th in value terms. India's main markets are the US, Germany and the UK.
