The Spanish Footwear Industry Federation (FICE) is concerned about US President Donald Trump's threat to suspend trade between the two countries. Tensions arose following a diplomatic dispute between Washington and Madrid over the use of Spanish military bases for US operations in the Middle East, according to Worldfootwear.com.
In its statement, FICE noted that the US is the leading market for Spanish footwear outside the EU, as well as a key partner for numerous small and medium-sized enterprises and brands that create jobs in Spain's main manufacturing areas.
The Federation believes such a statement could immediately impact the value chain—staffing, collection planning, production, logistics, financing, and distribution. FICE joined other major Spanish chambers of commerce (CEOE, CEPYME, and ATA) in calling for de-escalation, dialogue, and institutional coordination within the EU.
"We call for prudence and institutional solutions. Trade must be based on clear and predictable rules. To our customers and distributors in the United States: Spain is a reliable supplier, so let's maintain normal operations while institutions work to resolve the situation," the statement reads.
