A study by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in 2021 found that Nigeria's leather industry could not only increase its revenue by 70%, but also generate over $1 billion by 2025.
Nigeria has completed the Kafawa training program, which began in 2021 and aims to stimulate the growth of the leather sector. The program was part of a partnership between bag design and corporate accessories brand My World of Bags and the Mastercard Foundation.
The goal of the partnership is to educate and develop young people with the necessary skills to create and access development in the manufacturing industry to raise a generation that sees tailoring and manufacturing as worthwhile and fulfilling pursuits.
Through the Kafawa program, more than 300 people have been trained in manufacturing skills as well as training in entrepreneurship and business management. “One of the main goals of the training program is to create a pool of extremely skilled workers – professionals and successful entrepreneurs – who, in turn, create opportunities for other young and low-income people in their various communities,” she added.
In addition, Shinmi Olaebi, My World of Bags Program Manager, recalled the launch of the Leather and Leather Goods Policy Implementation Plan in Nigeria, which serves as a driving force for industry players along the leather value chain.
