Gucci has hired Demna Gvasalia as its new creative director, replacing Sabato De Sarno, who was fired on February 6 after just three seasons.
French luxury group Kering has set Gvasalia the difficult task of returning the Italian luxury brand to its previous level. Gucci has been losing sales for the past two years.
Georgian-born and Vetements founder Demna has been the creative director of Balenciaga since 2015. His latest collection for the fashion house was presented just recently, on March 9.
"What Demna has brought to fashion, to Balenciaga and to the success of the group is enormous. His creative force is exactly what Gucci needs. I thank him for everything he has achieved over the last ten years and look forward to him shaping the new artistic direction of Gucci," François-Henri Pinault, CEO of Kering, said in a statement.
Demna Gvasalia graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and worked at Maison Martin Margiela, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga.
