According to Focus Technologies, in January 2023, the number of customers in clothing, footwear and accessories stores in Russia increased by 6% compared to January 2022. The average check in the segment increased by 4%, turnover by 11% year-on-year. At the same time, in 2022 the number of buyers in fashion retail decreased compared to 2021, Kommersant writes.
There is also an increase in the conversion of a visitor into a buyer by January 2022. These data are confirmed by market participants. For example, according to the CEO of the Stockmann department store chain Gennady Levkin, in January 2023 department store revenue increased by 21%, the number of visitors - by 14%, the average cost per unit of goods sold - by 7% year-on-year.
The revival of consumer behavior at the beginning of the year, market participants explain in different ways. Someone believes that the effect of pent-up demand worked, due to the fact that buyers did not immediately adapt to the departure of large international fashion retailers from shopping centers and reduced their trips to stores for some time, someone explains the previous period of traffic decline in fashion retail - long vacations during which many left. There is also an opinion that the recovery in demand in January 2023 is associated with a period of sales.
