The scandal flared up in the United States because of the Air Max logo, which was placed on the sole of the sneakers. Nike pointed out that the logo in its writing resembles the word Allah, written in Arabic.
On January 19 at Change.Org, a petition was issued demanding that this model of sneakers be removed from sale. The text of the petition refers to the fact that Allah should not be allowed to be placed on shoes, especially on the bottom of the sole, which touches the ground, since in this way it can become dirty.
“This is disrespectful and extremely offensive to Muslims and offends Islam,” Change.Org wrote. 5400 people signed up for the petition.
The Nike team, represented by the press service, stated that it respects all religions and takes this issue seriously. “The Air Max logo was designed to be a stylized representation of the Nike Air Max brand. It is intended only to reflect the Air Max brand. Any other perceived meaning or representation is unintentional. ”
Meanwhile, this is not the first claim of the Muslim community to the Nike brand. In the 1997 year, Nike was forced to withdraw pairs of sneakers from worldwide sales of 38000 after the outrage in Britain over the fiery logo, which some thought was reminiscent of the word Allah.
The brand also faced a similar problem in the 1995 year in the United States, when it was ordered to remove a billboard near the University of Southern California, which had an image of a basketball player and the inscription “They called him Allah.”
