Nike Reports Lower Profits

Despite revenue growth in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023, US-based Nike reported a 28% decline in net income compared to its net income in the same period a year earlier.

Nike's revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 rose 5% to $12,8 billion from sales in the same period in fiscal 2022. Excluding currency fluctuations, revenue growth in the fourth quarter of 2023 was 8%.

Broken down by brand, Nike brand revenue for the reporting period was $12,2 billion, up 5% and 8% excluding currency fluctuations; and Nike Direct's revenue was $5,5 billion, up 15% FX-adjusted and 18% non-FX-adjusted compared to the same period a year earlier; Converse's revenue decreased 1% FX-adjusted and rose 1% FX-adjusted to $586 million.

In the final quarter of fiscal year 2023 ending May 31, the company's gross profit decreased by 140 basis points to 43,6% compared to the same period in fiscal 2022. As explained by the company, mainly “due to higher costs for the production of the product, as well as for freight and logistics, rising commissions and ongoing unfavorable changes in the currency sphere. Part of the increase in costs was offset by strategic pricing actions by companies and the creation of large stocks of products, due to the obsolescence of stocks in Greater China in the previous period.

For the full year ended May 31, sales were $51,2 billion, up 10% year-on-year (+16% excluding FX). Net income fell 16% to $5,1 billion, while earnings per share of $3,23 was down 14% year-over-year.
