New York-based WHP Global acquires Marc Jacobs from LVMH

The French luxury conglomerate has reached a definitive agreement to sell the Marc Jacobs luxury brand to WHP Global, the parent company of Vera Wang, G-Star, and Rag & Bone. As part of the agreement, Jacobs, who founded the company in 1984 with Robert Duffy, will retain his position as creative director.

"Marc Jacobs is a designer of rare creativity and unique vision. His influence on the world of fashion is undeniable, and I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart for his contribution to the success of the fashion house and the LVMH group over the past 30 years," said Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH, in a statement.

LVMH acquired the design company in 1997, shortly after Marc Jacobs was appointed as Louis Vuitton's first creative director.

The acquisition of Marc Jacobs will allow New York-based WHP Global, whose portfolio includes Vera Wang, G-Star and Rag & Bone, to grow its retail sales to more than $9,5 billion.

In addition, New York-based G-III Apparel Group, a leading manufacturer and distributor of branded clothing, footwear and accessories, whose portfolio includes such brands as DKNY, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, Guess, Levis, Ivanka Trump, Jessica Simpson, Donna Karan, Marc New York, announced the creation of a 50/50 joint venture with WHP Global.

The joint venture will retain the rights to Marc Jacobs' intellectual property, while G-III will acquire the brand's operating business and enter into a long-term licensing agreement.

G-III said the deal represents an investment of approximately $500 million, implying a total transaction valuation of approximately $1 billion.
