From theft, retail lost $ 6,648 billion

The Smart Cube conducted a study in which it turned out that the volume of financial losses from theft in Russian retail amounted to 6,648 billion dollars, or 1,35% of total sales.

The main reasons for financial losses of Russian retail operators are theft by unscrupulous employees (33,3% of the total share of losses) and theft by visitors (32,9%). Supplier fraud and losses from administrative errors to a lesser extent affect the total volume of losses: 7,6% and 26,1%, respectively.

Moreover, more than 60% of thefts are committed precisely during the New Year holidays season. It is followed by seasons of sales (19%) and preparation for school (12%).

“The key tool that can significantly reduce financial losses is not only modern equipment and control over its own personnel. First of all, it is necessary to analyze data on thefts on a monthly basis and find solutions to reduce the level of theft of the most “popular” goods.

Today, Russia is one of the leaders in investment in the prevention of shoplifting. In 2014, over $ 6 billion was spent on fighting losses by domestic retailers. But, judging by the results of the study, the volume of financial losses from theft in our country is still one of the highest in the world.

Almost 65% of shoplifters are people aged 18-45. Low income, together with a desire for a social life, are considered to be among the main reasons for theft. Shoplifters under 18 (23%) make up a significant share in Russia.
