Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, 57, has been appointed creative director of the Balenciaga fashion house. He replaces Demna Gvasalia, who moved to Gucci two months ago.
“A renowned and respected designer and master of haute couture, Pierpaolo Piccioli will bring his unique creative vision and extensive experience to Balenciaga, building on the strengths and success the house has achieved over the past decade under Demna’s creative leadership and continuing the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga and the historic Parisian house,” Kering said in a statement.
Piccioli began his career at Brunello Cucinelli. However, his real breakthrough came in 1990 in the accessories department at Fendi, where he worked for eight years. It was at Fendi that he met Maria Grazia Chiuri, with whom he moved to Valentino in 1998 to develop the accessories division.
They are credited with creating the Rockstud line: iconic studded accessories. In 2016, when Maria Grazia Chiuri moved to Dior, Pierpaolo Piccioli became the creative director of Valentino and only left the fashion house in 2024. Now his new appointment is at Balenciaga.
