Cold weather boosts clothing and footwear sales

According to the Mall Index study by Focus Technologie, between September 26 and October 23, traffic to shopping centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg increased. In the clothing and footwear segment in the reporting period, compared to the same period a year earlier, traffic increased by 26% in Moscow and 18% in St. Petersburg, writes Kommersant.

The increased activity of buyers is associated with the colder weather, which stimulated sales of winter clothing and shoes.

Analysts also note a decrease in vacancy levels in shopping centers in the two capitals. In Moscow in September, the reduction in the share of empty space was 2,4 percentage points, to 8,8%. In St. Petersburg, the vacancy rate is 7,8%. In the street retail segment, the vacancy rate is 13-15%; by the end of the year, according to forecasts, it may drop to 12-14%. For comparison, in pre-pandemic 2019, only about 10% of the space on shopping streets was empty.
