Portugal is ready to compete with China in the shoe manufacturing sector.
Over the past three years, Portugal has invested €120 million in automation and robotics for the footwear industry. This was announced by Luís Onofre, President of the Portuguese Association of Footwear, Components, Leather Goods, and Artificial Leather Manufacturers (APICCAPS), at the "Welcome to the Industry of the Future" conference, which took place on November 18 and 19 in Porto.
The country invested primarily in two major projects: €60 million in BioShoes4All, which aims to develop more sustainable materials, products and processes, and €50 million in automation, robotics and sustainability through the FAIST project.
Although Asian countries account for 90% of global footwear production (24 billion pairs), Mr. Onofre believes the situation can change: "We have the know-how, creativity, tradition, and technology to offer a reliable and competitive alternative to the mass production model. Portugal has clearly demonstrated this."
