Attendance in regional shopping centers is recovering

Attendance of shopping centers in the regions began to recover, primarily for small and medium-sized shopping centers, while in Moscow the dynamics of attendance remains negative, Kommersant writes with reference to analysts' data.

Thus, in January 2023, the 1C-Rarus Index indicator (reflects the number of visitors per 1 sq. m of retail space) exceeded the level of January 2022 by 4,7%, and January 2021 - by 4,8%. In particular, in St. Petersburg, the indicator increased by 8%, in the Moscow region - by 0,7% year-on-year.

There is a recovery in attendance, primarily in small local shopping centers. Thus, the Mall Index (also reflects the number of visitors per 1 sq. m of retail space) Focus Technologies indicates a recovery in attendance at small and medium-sized shopping centers with an area of up to 40 sq. m. m in Russia. And for large objects, the number of visitors in January was less than last year by 13%.

In Moscow, "1C-Rarus Index" in January remained less than last year by 0,9%, Mall Index - by 6%. According to Focus Technologies, in cities with a population of over a million, attendance in general is still 8% behind last year, and in cities with a population of up to 1 million people - only by 1-2%.

Mikhail Vasiliev, head of research and consulting at Focus Technologies, notes that in small towns small-scale objects are concentrated, located at a smaller distance from places of permanent residence of people. According to him, such malls were less affected by the massive closure of international brand stores last spring.

While the larger malls are often further away from sources of regular traffic, these are weekend destinations that require special travel, and have been worse off.

In general, experts note that the development of the online sales segment during the pandemic had a significant negative impact on the attendance of shopping centers. In this regard, Mikhail Burmistrov, CEO of Infoline-Analytics, doubts that the traffic of shopping centers will, in principle, be able to return to the level of 2019.

Attendance of shopping centers in the regions began to recover, first of all it concerns small and medium format shopping centers, while in Moscow the dynamics of attendance remains negative, -…
