The Ecco Leather tannery in Dongen, damaged by fire, will not be rebuilt.

The Ecco Leather tannery in Dongen, owned by Danish shoemaker Ecco and damaged by fire in May 2025, will not resume operations in the Netherlands. The Danish company has decided to relocate its tannery to Asia, reports Laconceria.it.

A Dutch plant was damaged by a major fire on May 4, 2025.The industrial building occupied 14,000 square meters and employed 200 people. Media reports noted that the factory's leather finishing shop remained intact, raising hopes for the resumption of operations.

However, in October 2025, Ecco announced a review of the company's future role within the group. As a result of this review, the decision was made to cease operations at the Dongen plant. Ecco Leather will continue to develop and supply leather to Ecco and selected customers from tanneries in Asia.

Ecco is one of the world's leading footwear brands, founded by the Turbaye family in Denmark in 1963. Today, the ECCO Group manufactures footwear and leather goods, including shoe factories and tanneries, wholesale and retail operations. ECCO tanneries are located in Indonesia, Thailand, and China.
