Prada is closing in on a deal to buy Versace from its U.S. parent company Capri Holdings and has set an acquisition price of about 1,5 billion euros, Bloomberg reported on Sunday.
"Relaunching a brand is not an easy task. In the early 2000s, we bought Jil Sander and Helmut Lang, but we made strategic mistakes. That's why we chose to sell them at a loss and start all over again," explains Prada Group President Patricio Bertelli.
German brand Jil Sander and Austrian label Helmut Lang were sold in 2006 when they became a burden to Prada.
Capri Holdings acquired Versace in 2018 for €1,83 billion. At the time, 20% of the Italian luxury brand was owned by the American fund BlackRock, with the rest in family hands.
After the label came under the control of Capri Holdings, Versace's aura lost some of its luster. The company's sales fell 15% to $193 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2025, which ended in late December.
