Indian government introduces new shoe quality standards

From July 1, India introduces new quality standards for shoes for local production and imports. The new quality standards set the types of raw materials that can be used to make shoes, as well as the standards for manufacturing soles and heels.

This measure is introduced to ensure the safety of consumers in accordance with the certification rules of the Indian Standards Institute (ISI).

From July 1, medium and large manufacturers and importers will be required to comply with new quality standards for footwear and related products. Small businesses will have to adapt to the new rules only from January 1, 2024, while for micro businesses these standards will become mandatory from July 1, 2024.

Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), said shoe testing centers have been established across India and companies do not need to set up such centers in their factories.
