US President Postpones Introduction of Foreign Trade Tariffs and Announces New Rates

US President Donald Trump has formally delayed the imposition of higher tariffs on foreign trade until August 1 and sent letters to 14 countries, including Japan and Korea, detailing the rates they will face on US exports.

The announcement came after the White House's 90-day pause on imposing the most aggressive import tariffs expired this week.

According to a White House press release, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan and Malaysia will face a 25% tariff on their exports to the United States. Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Africa will face a 30% tariff, Indonesia will face a 32% tariff, Bangladesh and Serbia will face a 35% tariff, Cambodia and Thailand will face a 36% tariff, and Myanmar and Laos will face a 40% tariff. These rates will go into effect on August 1.

Some economists and analysts believe the announcement was made to maximize the country's negotiating leverage to reach an agreement before the new deadline. Asked by a reporter if the new August deadline had been set, Trump said, "I would say it's firm, but not 100 percent. If they call and say we'd like to do something differently, we'll be open to that."

Some of the countries targeted by the measures, including Japan, Thailand and Malaysia, have expressed a willingness to continue negotiations with the US to reach more favourable agreements. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said diplomatic efforts would continue but urged local companies to speed up diversification.
