According to a study by the Check Index resource of the fiscal data operator OFD Platform (takes into account data from 1,1 million online cash registers in Russia), conducted at the request of RBC, the volume of clothing and footwear sales in Russia fell sharply in the spring of 2022, but gradually recovered during the summer. At the same time, the growth of the average bill in clothing and footwear retail in August 2022 amounted to 19% year-on-year.
In April and May, the decrease in purchases in the clothing and footwear segment in Russia in quantitative terms was 20-25% compared to the previous year, OFD Platform analysts say.
In the summer months, the segment began to recover: the niches vacated after the departure of Western brands began to be occupied by other brands. But the volume of purchases was still lower than a year earlier, although consumers spent more on these purchases.
In June, the volume of clothing sales in monetary terms was 18% lower than a year earlier, and in real terms - by 22% (absolute figures are not given in the Check Index). Consumers spent an average of about 5,5 thousand rubles on buying clothes. (the average check was 19% lower than in June 2021). In July, sales continued to recover both in monetary terms and in physical terms, falling by 12% and 19% year-on-year, respectively. The size of the average purchase in Russia was at the level of 5,3 thousand rubles, which is 29% higher than last year.
In August, the volume of sales of clothing and footwear in monetary terms in Russia as a whole was higher by 2% than in the same period in 2021, but the number of purchased goods fell by 14%. The average purchase receipt increased by 19% year-on-year and amounted to 5,4 thousand rubles. In Moscow, the average purchase receipt in clothing and footwear stores in August amounted to 5,8 thousand rubles, which is 24% higher than a year earlier. The volume of sales in monetary terms increased by 10%, while in physical terms it decreased by 9%.
