The growth of shoe imports in Germany contradicts the actual sales situation in the country.

In 2025, Germany imported more shoes but did not resume buying them. The paradox of a market that grew in numbers but shrank in real terms is due to cautious consumption, store closures, and pressure on retail chains, writes Laconceria.it.

According to HDS/L (the German Association of Footwear and Leather Goods), Germany imported 10,5% more footwear in 2025 – 737,5 million pairs, worth €13,3 billion. China and Vietnam remain the main suppliers, while Italy increased its footwear exports to Germany by 5,2%, with sales of women's leather footwear growing by 33%.

These figures paint a picture of a dynamic market, but its participants see the situation differently. As the Italian publication laconceria.it reports, for many Italian manufacturers, 2025 has proven to be little better than the disastrous 2024.

German store traffic has fallen by 10-15%, unsold inventory exceeds 40%, and around 1000 clothing, footwear, and leather goods stores are closing every year. The uncertain economic situation is impacting consumer behavior, with consumers buying only when necessary. Retail is suffering, and online retail continues to decline in market share and lose its central position in cities.
