From June 15 to September 13, the Stroganov Palace of the Russian Museum (St. Petersburg) hosts the exhibition "Russian Patchwork", which displays unique examples of Russian folk sewing techniques and ornaments from pieces of fabric collected in different parts of Russia.
The art of patchwork, known to many peoples of the world, has become widespread. "Quilt clubs" unite lovers of sewing ornamental compositions from pieces of fabric, which can be used with appliqué, embroidery, collage and other techniques. "Quilt" is one of the brightest and most diverse types of contemporary art.
However, folk sewing differs in many respects from the urban “quilt” - it has its own methods, worked out for decades, forms of objects, its own figurative structure. In each locality - a group of villages, a district, a region - it is distinguished by its originality and uniqueness.
The exhibition in the Stroganov Palace demonstrates genuine folk patchwork, which has been developed in the villages, villages and small towns of Russia. Its goal is to present both the local features of patchwork of various centers of folk art in Russia, and the original creative style of individual masters. The exhibition is dedicated to the Year of Folk Art and Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia and the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Folk Art of the State Russian Museum.
