Reduced import duties will most negatively affect shoe makers

From September 1 to 2015, within the framework of the obligations of the WTO, of which Russia became a member two years ago, import duties will be reduced by almost 4 thousand items.

According to members of Soyuzlegprom, the upcoming change in customs duty rates will lead to direct losses for the Russian light industry, which can be estimated this year in the amount of more than 400 million dollars (about 25 billion rubles), and the peak of losses will occur in 2016 year.

The leather and footwear industry suffered the most from Russia's entry into the WTO. Already, unequal competition is observed in the segment, caused by the increase in illegal import of shoes through Kazakhstan, as well as by the expectation of the forthcoming reduction in import duties by almost 2,5 times within the framework of the WTO and the signing of an agreement on duty-free trade with Vietnam, the fourth footwear manufacturer in the world.
