Walter Chiapponi will leave Tod's after the womenswear show in Milan in September. The designer was named creative director of menswear and womenswear for the Italian luxury brand in October 2019.
According to the company, the decision was made "by mutual agreement", and "a new creative direction will be announced in the coming months."
Before Tod's, Chiapponi worked for Bottega Veneta for many years. Chiapponi's arrival at Tod's was a turning point for the brand, which hasn't had a womenswear creative director since 2016, after parting ways with Alessandra Facchinetti.
In addition, since June 2019, Tod's has not even had a creative director for the men's clothing and footwear line, after the departure of Andrea Incontri.
The designer joined Tod's on the eve of the pandemic and contributed to the development of the brand. Under his leadership, a new version of the brand's signature rubber sole appeared, it came out in an enlarged size on moccasins, ballet flats and boots. The designer also expanded the line of bags.
Chiaporini is leaving Tod's at a good time for the brand, with parent company Tod's Group's revenue up 2023% in the first quarter of 23,2 to €270,5m, up from €219,6m in the same period a year earlier.
