Shopping index reflecting the number of visitors per 1 sq. M. meters of retail space in Moscow and St. Petersburg during the holidays was a quarter lower than the value for the holiday period last year, - writes "Kommersant" with reference to the study of Watcom Group.
Thus, in Moscow, the Shopping index at the beginning of the year (January 1-10) was lower by an average of 24,6%, and in St. Petersburg by 26,9% year-on-year. At the same time, spending by Russians in retail stores and in catering establishments on New Year's holidays decreased by 15%.
According to the MCB, shoe stores lost 16% of their revenue during the holidays, while sellers of women's clothing - 27%.
The drop in the Shopping Index during the holidays roughly corresponds to the average for December, when in Moscow the indicator was less than the same value last year by 24,4%, and in St. Petersburg - 30,3%. In November, similar values were estimated at 26,8% and 27,1%, respectively.
Analysts and market participants attribute the drop in store traffic solely to quarantine restrictions, and assume that shopping mall traffic will not recover in the first quarter.
