According to a TASD statement, the Turkish footwear industry achieved over $1,1 billion worth of exports between January and November 2022. The sector, which achieved a record export volume in 2021, is preparing to close the year with an export volume of more than $1 billion 200 million.
Turkish Footwear Manufacturers Association (TASD) President Berke Ichten said 2022 is the year Europe rediscovers Turkish footwear. “We are facing a lot of orders, especially from countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy and Romania,” he said.
Turkey's footwear exports grew by 11% over the 20,2-month period. Between January and November, Turkey exported 344 million pairs of shoes, earning $1 billion 112 million in foreign currency.
Berke Ichten noted that for many years the biggest buyers of Turkish shoes were Russia and Ukraine. This year, Germany became the leader in the ranking of countries for buyers of shoes from Turkey. The volume of exports of Turkish shoes to Germany for 11 months of 2022 amounted to $90,6 million. Other countries in the top five importers of Turkish shoes are Iraq, Spain, Romania and Italy. Ichten assumes that by the end of the year, Turkey's footwear exports in value terms could reach about $1 billion 200 million.
Recall that in 2023, Turkey is preparing to host the World Shoe Congress, the largest international event, which will be held in Istanbul in May. The Turkish footwear industry is also pinning great hopes on this event, counting on raising Turkey's status as a major global footwear manufacturer.
