The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan, together with the Uzbekcharmpoyabzali association of leather and shoe enterprises, held a round table on the further development of the country's leather and shoe industry.
The event was attended by heads of leather and footwear enterprises, representatives of the ministries of economy, finance, foreign economic relations, investments and trade of Uzbekistan, the chamber of commerce and industry, the state tax committee, the central bank and other departments.
The chairman of the association of leather and footwear enterprises “Uzbekcharmpoyabzali” Iskandar Atakhanov noted that the successful implementation of the industry program adopted in the 2007 year for the development and modernization of leather and footwear enterprises, improving the quality and increasing the volume of finished products for the 2007-2011 years gives significant results. So, for example, at the enterprises that are part of the association, modernization, technical and technological re-equipment were carried out.
The enterprises of the leather and footwear industry of Uzbekistan annually produce over 10 million pairs of high-quality shoes, modern leather clothes and leather goods for 12 billion soums. At the same time, export volumes are growing dynamically.
As was noted at the meeting, high industry performance was achieved due to the availability of qualified labor resources, a developed communication network, banking and legal services, low cost of energy resources, continuous improvement of technologies and the presence of demand in the domestic and foreign markets.
The participants of the round table analyzed the existing barriers and limitations in expanding the production of domestic competitive products, examined ways to strengthen interaction between the private sector and the relevant government bodies to assist the development of the leather industry in Uzbekistan.
