An exhibition in memory of Vyacheslav Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin opened in the Hermitage

Somehow imperceptibly for Moscow (I did not see anything from my colleagues), an exhibition dedicated to the work of our great artists and couturiers, Vyacheslav Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin, opened in St. Petersburg on May 12. The exposition is located in the Restoration and Storage Center "Staraya Derevnya" of the State Hermitage, the public is presented with works created by masters and stored in the museum's collection. For example, unique costumes from the wardrobe of opera singer Elena Obraztsova, designed by Vyacheslav Zaitsev, and a dress made by Valentin Yudashkin.

Mikhail Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage:

“Today we want to remember and thank wonderful people who passed away almost simultaneously - Vyacheslav Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin. Two of our wonderful fashion designers who, by the power of their talent, made the world understand what Russian fashion designers are, and that we can determine fashion both at home and in the world.

These are their enormous achievements, and we are very glad that both of them were friends with the Hermitage. We want to remember and show those things that have recently appeared in our storage. We are grateful to Vyacheslav Mikhailovich, who presented us with a number of costumes and are grateful to the collectors.”

Nina Tarasova, Head of the Applied Arts Sector of the Department of the History of Russian Culture of the State Hermitage Museum, curator of the exhibition:

“We present an exhibition in memory of Vyacheslav Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin. I was lucky to work alongside Vyacheslav Mikhailovich during the installation of the exhibition “Vyacheslav Zaitsev in the Hermitage” in 2016. It was an amazing meeting, amazing work with a person who was incredibly creative, gifted, with a person who was all glowing with kindness and energy. He made everything very simple, easy; the feeling of light remained with everyone who worked with him. And it so happened that after the exhibition in 2016, he gave us 16 ensembles. He said that the exhibition in the Hermitage is the result of his work, his life over the past 30 years. And now we will remember Vyacheslav Mikhailovich and Valentin Abramovich by their creations, by their costumes. The memory of them in the Hermitage forever.”

Information for those who want to visit the exhibition:

The works of Vyacheslav Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin can only be seen as part of a sightseeing tour of the Open Storage of the Restoration and Storage Center "Staraya Derevnya" (37, Zausadebnaya Street). The works are presented in the Open Storage of Western European Tapestries until July 2, 2023.
