Companies in Europe will be banned from destroying clothing and footwear.

The European Commission has adopted new ecodesign measures that will ban large companies operating in the European Union from destroying unsold shoes and clothing from July 19, 2026, in a bid to curb a practice that generates around 5,6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually – almost equivalent to Sweden's total net emissions in 2021.

Every year in Europe, between 4 and 9% of unsold textiles are destroyed before they are used.

The ban on product destruction will apply to large companies from July 19, 2026, and to medium-sized companies from July 2030.

Rules regarding the disclosure of information on recycled products already apply to large companies and will become mandatory for medium-sized companies from 2030.

The aim of the product destruction ban is to encourage the textile industry to "move more rapidly towards more circular practices and further advance the circular economy across the EU," the European Commission explains.
