Consumer activity in Germany declined in 2022, online sales fell by 8,8% year-on-year, the footwear sector was hit the hardest, according to a statistical report from the German e-commerce and mail order association BEVH. BEVH analysts attribute the decline in online sales to the impact of the military conflict in Ukraine on the country's economy, according to shoeintelligence.com.
So in nominal terms, not adjusted for inflation, online sales in Germany in 2022 fell by 8,8% to 90,4 billion euros, compared with sales of 99,1 billion euros in 2021. But compared to pre-pandemic 2019, online sales increased by 2022% in 24,5. (The pandemic has boosted e-commerce overall.)
In the reporting year 2022, online footwear sales were the hardest hit, falling by 16,6% to 4,50 billion euros, compared to 5,45 billion euros registered a year earlier. For example, clothing sales in the country in 2022 fell by 12,8% to 16,79. billion euros from 19,72 billion euros in 2021. The data also shows that multi-channel retailers have been hit harder than purely online players.
“The crisis has clearly affected online sales. The marked reluctance to buy, especially goods that are not essentials, reflects the current insecurity of people combined with the increased cost of living,” commented BEVH President Gero Furchheim.
