The crisis has put 4000 jobs at risk in the Italian province of Veneto. Businesses and trade unions are sounding the alarm, and local companies are forced to use social protection systems to avoid layoffs and closures, writes La Conceria.
In 2024, Veneto lost 50 footwear companies out of 1083, with 894 jobs cut out of 14. In the leather goods sector, 722 companies out of 8 were closed, despite an increase in the number of employees (+277) to 135 employees at the end of 4144.
In 2025, the trend has not changed. According to Daniele Salmaso, president of the Confindustria Veneto Est footwear group, “support at the level of public measures, such as the moratorium on loans during Covid, would be effective and fair.”
Support measures may include: suspension of tax payments for companies in crisis; introduction of a moratorium on the repayment of guaranteed loans; state support for companies' participation in international fairs.
