During the holidays, traffic in shopping centers in Russia was lower than last year.

Holiday traffic in Russian shopping centers was 16-18% lower than during last year's New Year's holidays. The last week of 2025 saw an increase of approximately 20% compared to the annual weekly average.

However, in January, traffic traditionally declined: by 15-17% compared to the December peak in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and by about 6% in other regions. This was reported by Pavel Lyulin, Vice President of the Union of Shopping Centers (USC), in an interview with TASS.

According to the expert, after a long weekend, shopping center traffic is typically lower during the first workweek, then returns to a more stable pattern by mid-month. By the end of January, figures are expected to approach the annual average.

At the same time, the largest shopping center in St. Petersburg, the Galeria Shopping Center, predicts that in 2026, consumers will be more willing to shop in traditional retail stores, such as shopping centers.

The main reason is consumer fatigue from scrolling when purchasing goods on marketplaces.

Oleg Voitsehovsky, founder and managing director of the Russian Council of Shopping Centers, also notes:

"The digital environment offers people a wide variety of choices. On the one hand, this is an advantage. On the other, we're seeing shoppers increasingly reluctant to spend time scrolling through product links. Additionally, logistical bottlenecks often delay orders, which negatively impacts shopping behavior. This has led to oversupply, making it more convenient and faster to purchase the desired product in person, same-day. At the same time, analysts note that turnover is currently growing in the service sector. 37% of respondents report this growth among food service operators and restaurants, and 13% among entertainment and fitness centers."
