In the days leading up to the New Year, consumers prefer shopping in traditional retail outlets.

According to a survey by the development company Ortiga Development, approximately 25% of Russians shop for New Year's gifts at shopping malls rather than using online marketplaces.

When shopping at shopping centers, shoppers expect to be able to assess the quality and size of goods on-site, as well as take advantage of the holiday discounts that chain stores traditionally offer at this time.

Moreover, 53% of respondents noted that they purchase half of their gifts in shopping malls, and the remaining half on marketplaces if they can't find something suitable at the mall. Only 22% of respondents named online services as their preferred gift-buying platform due to time constraints and the convenience of delivery.

"Despite the growing popularity of well-known online platforms, we see continued interest in shopping in shopping malls, especially during the holidays," says Konstantin Samedi, Director of Sales at Ortiga Development. "This is largely due to the fact that, in addition to shopping, shopping malls offer a variety of leisure opportunities. Furthermore, even with the more subdued shopping activity of recent years, people are drawn to the festive atmosphere of shopping malls during the pre-New Year period."

According to the survey, approximately 60% of respondents plan to visit shopping malls primarily to buy gifts. Another 25% of Russians said they plan to visit cafes and restaurants, go to the cinema, and also shop for outfits for upcoming corporate events and celebrations while shopping.

The majority of Russians surveyed—37%—named shopping malls as a place where they can feel the holiday spirit approaching during the pre-New Year period. Another 26% of respondents see shopping malls as a way to find great deals, and 19% see them as a way to get the goods they need in one place.
