Vietnam overtakes China in race for US market

In the first quarter of 2026, Vietnam overtook China to become the leading supplier of footwear to the US market. This result is due to two factors. First, the increased competitiveness of the Vietnamese footwear industry. Second, the ongoing trend of American brands moving away from locating footwear production in China. Americans are now choosing production sites in Southeast Asia, primarily Vietnam, reports laconceria.it.

The EU and the US are increasing footwear exports from Vietnam. In the first half of 2026, footwear exports from Hanoi reached $11,949 billion (up 0,5% compared to the same period in 2025). According to data from the US Federal Trade Commission (published by Vietnam.vn), in the first quarter of 2026, Vietnam's exports exceeded those from China.

Many large Vietnamese footwear manufacturers have decided to sacrifice their margins in favor of significant investments to comply with EU regulations (digital product passports, "green transition," etc.). Meanwhile, export prices have increased by only 5% over the past 20 years. Companies prefer to operate at breakeven or incur small losses to maintain their market share.

According to Vo Tri Thanh, director of the Institute of Branding Strategy and Competitiveness in Hanoi, the local footwear industry faces two obstacles. The first is geopolitical instability in the Middle East, which impacts supply chains, increasing transportation costs.

Second, the risk of protectionist policies, particularly from the United States. Another problem facing the Vietnamese footwear industry, according to local experts, is its dependence on foreign materials, which account for 60-65% of costs.

It's no coincidence that Phan Thi Thanh Xuan, Vice President and Secretary General of LEFASO (the Vietnam Leather, Footwear, and Bags Association), believes it's crucial to promote the development of the local raw materials and component industry to better control costs, reduce dependence on international logistics, and ensure timely deliveries. A proposal to establish a raw materials reserve system, similar to the oil reserve model, is also being considered.
